A school gym which cost a third of the normal price of gym buildings was used for the first time yesterday. The gym at Coláiste Choilm in Ballincollig is the only one of its kind in the country. The €300,000 gym is the brainchild of an American family-run company called Sprung Structures. The building is made from PVC and aluminium and was built in just seven days at the beginning of October. It had been planned to build a €1 million gym but Department of Education cutbacks forced the school to come up with an alternative idea.
The school’s principal, Pat Kinsella, said the funds were raised by the Parents Association, the school’s 1,200 students and a grant from the National Lottery. "An assembly was held at the gym yesterday by all the students who were running a Non Uniform Day" explained Mr Kinsella. “It marked the completion of the new gym and the completion of the fundraising.” He said that yesterday’s Non Uniform Day raised €3,000. The gym will be used by the school for PE and school sports and will also be used by the local community. Sprung Structures built a similar structure at the K Club in Kildare which is being used as a clubhouse.
